The AAA Texas 500 is a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stock car race held at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas. The inaugural race took place on November 6, 2005. The race has always started in the late afternoon, gone through sunset and twilight, and ended under the lights at night, much like the Coca Cola 600 in May, but it is not considered a night event. The race is held on the first weekend in November each year; TMS has expressed interest in changing the date, which is also the opening weekend of deer hunting season in Texas.

The race was acquired as a result of the Ferko lawsuit, which forced NASCAR to relinquish the sport's fourth major, the Mountain Dew Southern 500 and in the process end its Grand Slam, as the Southern 500 was one of the four races that made it up. This race has been derisively referred to as the Francis Ferko 500, mostly by traditionalist fans upset by the demise of the Southern 500.

Texas Motor Speedway

The Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas is dubbed ( The Great American Speedway ) and is the 2nd largest sports facility in America. Construction on this 1.5 mile, intermediate, quad oval track began in 1995. Basically, it has been referred to as an intermediate track, or a cookie cutter. Texas Motor Speedway was once considered the fastest non-restrictor plate track on the NASCAR circuit, with qualifying speeds in excess of 192 mph and corner entry speeds over 200 mph. However, as the tracks' respective racing surfaces continue to wear, qualifying speeds at Atlanta have become consistently faster.

Texas has a layout very similar to Atlanta Motor Speedway and Lowe's Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway). The track measures 1.5 miles around and is banked 24 degrees in the turns, and is of the quad-oval design, where the front straightaway juts outward slightly.Texas Motor Speedway was once considered the fastest non-restrictor plate track on the NASCAR circuit, with qualifying speeds in excess of 192 mph and corner entry speeds over 200 mph.

In 2009, Kurt Busch drove to Victory Lane at Texas after his younger brother ran out of fuel with 2 1/2 laps left. Kyle Busch was trying to stretch his fuel to make the end while his brother Kurt was closing in steadily from behind. Kyle ran out of gas with 2 1/2 laps to go and dove onto pit road. His brother Kurt took over the top spot and was able to make it to the checkers to steal the win.

2008 AAA Texas 500 Winner

In 2008, Edwards dominated most of the race, but when a host of drivers took two tires on the second-to-last pit stop, Edwards, who opted for four, became the chaser. Crew chief Bob Osborne told Edwards not to worry, that he had a plan. Turns out the plan was not to pit again, going the final 69 laps on a single tank of gas. It may not have been Osborne's original idea, but it worked, because when the rest of the field pitted one last time, Edwards took back the lead, dialed back on his accelerator to save fuel and cruised to his eighth win of the season. Can Edwards do it again in 2009 or will Jimmy johnson have other plans for this years Sprint Cup victory?
