Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta, GA is the site of the 2010 Labor Day Classic 500 (formerly the Pep Boys Auto 500). This most recent name change for the fall Atlanta race reflects a rescheduling of this particular race, the second in its history. Prior to its most recent rescheduling the fall Atlanta race was always run during the final stages of the NASCAR season.
Part of what makes Labor Day Classic 500 so special is that Atlanta Motor Speedway is one of the best tracks in NASCAR. The track, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, is one of the fastest in racing, and back in ’95 Dale Earnhardt set a track record with an average speed of more than 163 mph. That means drivers can easily clock over 200 mph at points during the race, so that makes this one of the most exciting events of the year.
As you would expect with a name like the Labor Day Classic 500, the event at the Atlanta Motor Speedway is the highlight of Labor Day weekend. Formerly known as the Pep Boys Auto 500 and the Bass Pro Shop MBNA 500, this race was generally run in the fall until it was pushed back to Labor Day weekend in ’09. Even though that meant it was no longer one of the races in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, it did give it increased significance because of its new spot on the calendar and the fact that it is run at night.
