The NASCAR Good Sam 500 storms through Phoenix International Raceway! Which driver will win this years Good Sam 500? This is the first of two races that take place at Phoenix International Raceway, the other is the Checker Auto Parts 500 that is set to get underway late in the season.
This year the Phoenix International Raceway offers you even more racing, as the Subway Fresh Fit 600 is again the Good Sam 500. As there was already a race sponsored by Subway on the schedule (the now TUMS Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville), the name "Subway Fresh 600" was devised to reduce confusion. Subway later added the word "Fit" to the sponsorship to promote its Fresh Fit combo choices.
Phoenix International Speedway. Although the track is new to the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, Phoenix International Speedway is known for its unusual tri-oval shape and has been used by the Indy Racing League. At one mile, Phoenix is a mid-length track in a “D” shaped tri-oval. One of the unique features is the Hillside, a lawned slope where NASCAR fans congregate to enjoy the race. While Phoenix is a relatively flat track, with a mere 11 degree banking, the action is still very intense, and you will see drivers pushing their cars to the limits and getting sideways coming out of turns two and four.
Phoenix International Raceway will go an additional 63 laps and miles on the one-mile oval, up from 312, The new distance will be 375 laps/miles, the longest race since PIR began hosting NASCAR in 1988. PIR measures its Cup races in kilometers, so it will be just over 603 kilometers, up from the previous 500 km. NASCAR announced the lengthening of the race in January 2010.
The Good Sam 500 comes in April, following the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. The past few years have been a who’s who of NASCAR, with Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon, and Kevin Harvick all notching wins at Phoenix International.
